Cruising in Style? Life Jackets are Your Lifeline!

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

The waters around Miami are beautiful — and enjoying them in style on a yacht is the only way to go! But whenever you’re on the high seas (or low ones) the experience does come with some risk: the weather can change, the water can become rough, accidents can happen; any one of a number of factors can necessitate the wearing of life jackets.

The professionals at Sea Miami Yacht Rentals want to help you make the most of your nautical experience — and that starts with taking some proper precautions. That means being prepared and knowing proper life jacket protocol to ensure the safety of you and your family.

What you need to know:

  • U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets must be on board and properly stored on the boat.

  • Each life jacket must be the right size for the person wearing it; too big, and the life jacket will ride up around your face; too small and you won’t stay afloat.

  • Life jackets designed for adults will not work for children.

  • Children under 13 must wear a life jacket unless they are below deck or in an enclosed cabin.

Tips for the right fit:

  1. Make sure the life jacket is a proper fit for your size and weight and fastens properly

  2. Make sure there is no excess room above the openings and that the jacket does not ride up over your chin or face.

  3. For the best fit, try the life jacket in shallow water under safe and supervised conditions.
